At the 2008 NFL Draft the Atlanta Falcons and the Baltimore Ravens went into the draft trying to solve their biggest problem, their quarterback situation. The Falcons were coming off the Michael Vick debacle while the Ravens saw Steve McNair retire. Rather than go the free agency route, the Falcons and Ravens both drafted what were considered solid QB prospects and were hoping for the best. The Falcons drafted Matt Ryan with their first selection while the Ravens took Joe Flacco and after 10 weeks, both teams seem to have made the right choice. Let's take a closer look at each QB and what they have done so far this season.

Matt Ryan - Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons selected Matt Ryan with the third overall pick in the draft. Ryan was not handed the starting QB job in the preseason, but his poise and arm beat out the veteran arms the Falcons have on their roster. This season was supposed to be the first in a series or rebuilding season's but Ryan's development has accelerated the process. In week 10 Ryan completed 16 of 23 passes for 248 yards and 2 TD's in a big 34-20 win over the Saints. This week's win has the Falcons at 6-3 and challenging not only for a playoff spot but a division title. This season Ryan has thrown for 1,909 yards with 11 TD's and 5 interceptions. He is leading the offense and is not making very many mistakes. No one could have expected a 6-3 record after 10 weeks but after what was a season to forget last year, the Falcons will take this run so far.

In week 11 the Falcons host the high-flying Denver Broncos. The Falcons D will have to be ready for Jay Cutler's arm but Matt Ryan will be able to put up some decent numbers vs. a Broncos D that has been carved up in almost every week this season. Atlanta is undefeated at home and this game vs. the Broncos will be a good test not only for Ryan but for the whole Falcons team.

Joe Flacco - Baltimore Ravens

Flacco impressed several teams with his size and arm strength and it was the Baltimore Ravens who selected him with their first round selection. Flacco wasn't overly impressive in the preseason and wasn't expected to be the Ravens starting QB when the season started but injuries to Boller and Smith saw Flacco rise on the depth chart and the result to date has been very good. At 6-3 the Ravens sit tied for top spot in the AFC North with the Steelers. Flacco has thrown for 1,649 yards and 7 TD's with 7 int's but he has looked very confident in leading this team. Baltimore has a solid veteran D and they have stood behind Flacco and the result has been a successful season so far.

Next week the Ravens travel to New York to face the reigning Super Bowl Champion Giants. This will be Flacco's toughest challenge to date vs. a fast and punishing Giants D. New York's D has roughed up QB's like Roethlisberger and McNabb in recent weeks and it will be interesting to see how Flacco fares against them in Week 11.

Although both Ryan and Flacco are rookies neither has played like one this season. Their hard work has won each of them the respect of their teammates and in a couple of months when we're talking about rookie of the year, expect both Ryan and Flacco's names to come up.
