After playing so-so in the first half of the semi's, both teams turned it on to record double digit wins. For Illinois, they played very good defense and made Louisville look awful in the second half on their way to a 72-57 win. NC turned on the jets in the second half and scored 54 points while holding Michigan State to 33 points, winning 87-71. Although we're Big 10 fans, we look for Illinois' storybook season to end tonight with NC taking home the trophy and Roy Williams winning his first title. In the Championship game teams that play great defense in the semi's, allowing 65 or less points, seem to struggle in the finals. Last year Georgia Tech advanced with a 67-65 win over Oklahoma State, then lost and failed to cover against Connecticut. In 2003, Kansas killed Marquette in the semi's 94-61 then were upset by Syracuse. In 2002, Indiana defeated Oklahoma 73-64 then got beat by Maryland 64-52 failing as 7.5 point dogs. In 2001, Arizona mauled Michigan State 80-61, then as 4-point dogs lost to Duke 82-72. In the 2000 Championship game both teams in the finals allowed 65 or less in the semi's. Finally, in 1999 Utah beat NC in the semi's while allowing only 58 points and then lost SU and ATS to Kentucky in the finals. NC has too many weapons and too strong of an inside game for Illinois to contend with. It may not be a blowout but we're taking NC and laying the 2.5-points.
